Preparing for Preschool

Starting preschool is an exciting milestone for your child and for you. Whether you're sending your first little one to school or you're a returning family, this guide can help make the transition smooth and positive.

Below are simple ways to help your child feel confident, comfortable, and ready for their first day.

🧩 Practice Routines

Children feel more confident when they know what to expect. In the weeks leading up to school, begin practicing simple routines like waking up on time, brushing teeth, eating breakfast, and getting dressed.

📚 Read Books About Preschool

Books can help children explore big emotions and get familiar with what school might be like.

Here are a few great options:

  • Llama Llama Misses Mama by Anna Dewdney

  • The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn

  • Maisy Goes to Preschool by Lucy Cousins

  • Rosie Goes to Preschool by Karen Katz

🎨 Build Independence

Give your child lots of opportunities to try things on their own. Encourage them to:

  • Wash hands independently

  • Put on shoes and a backpack

  • Use the bathroom with minimal help

  • Clean up after themselves

💬 Talk About Feelings

Let your child know it’s okay to feel nervous, excited, shy, or unsure. Talk about how school is a safe place where they will make friends, learn new things, and be cared for by their teachers.

🧸 Bring Something Familiar

A small comfort item such as a family photo, or small stuffed animal can help ease the transition. Check with your child's teacher to see what’s permitted in your child’s classroom.
