5-26-20 First Grade Art Lesson - Positive and Negative Tree

Last week we used positive and negative space to make a design. This week we will use these two spaces or shapes to make two opposite pictures of a tree. The videos below reviews positive and negative space and the Elements of Art. The positive space in a picture is also the positive shape and the negative space makes the negative shape. Shape and space are two Elements of Art.

This is an animated video illustrating the Elements of Art.

5-12-20 First Grade Art Lesson

Origami is the art of paper folding. We made a few Origami animals last year in Kindergarten. Origami comes from the country of Japan. For this lesson you do not need special paper, but it must be square. To make a square from a rectangular piece of paper fold one corner over to meet the opposite side of the paper and cut off the excess. Try making the monster bookmark and bunny below and color when you are done.

Watch this beautiful video about the history of Origami.

Bulb Fields

Bulb Fields by Vincent van Gogh, 1883.

Written Directions

Look at the beautiful painting “Bulb Fields” by Vincent van Gogh. Notice all the beautiful colors and the lines separating the beds of flowers. The lines are getting closer together as they get farther away in the fields. Vincent van Gogh is showing SPACE with these lines. Try to draw your own tulip farm using whatever drawing and painting materials that you might have.

I used Craypaz, or oil pastel, and water colors with a cotton swab in my example below.

4-28-20 First Grade Art Lesson

Watch the video below to see how you can remember warm and cool colors.

Color WheelWC

Look at the color wheel above. It is divided into two groups. Red, orange and yellow are called warm colors. Green, blue and violet and called cool colors. Using two pieces of paper, cut one to be smaller than the other, leaving about an inch on each side. Use the smaller paper to draw a picture of a room in your house, but only use either warm or cool colors. Use the opposite for coloring in the large paper which will become a frame for you picture. Don’t use warm colors with cool colors.

Matisse           Matisse

La Gerbe, Matisse (1953).

Henri Matisse is a famous French artist who began painting like many other artists. His style of painting changed throughout his life but as he grew older, he became ill and was not able to stand and work at an easel anymore. He had to work from his bed where he spent a lot of time. With the help of his assistants, he made art that he called “cut outs”. His helpers would paint sheets of paper and he would cut shapes from these and arrange them into the first collage art.

Use the bank of shapes above to draw and cut out to make a Matisse collage. Matisse loved shapes that look like things from nature. These are called organic shapes. Use colored paper or color some paper with crayons to cut from. Try drawing some of these shapes or some of your own to arrange and glue on a paper to make a collage. You can print out the PDF "Matisse" file to the right if you would like a larger version.
