How to Retell a Story

Use the Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then Strategy:

When you read  or listen to a fiction story with your child, on Raz-Kids, Tumblebooks, or any fiction book you read together at home, practice summarizing the story with this strategy. Try to use what I call, “right there” details.   Make sure your child is using the characters’ names. Encourage your child to go back to the story if they do not remember. This is what we do in our small groups, and your child will be familiar with going back to the story.

Example, using the fairytale Cinderella:

Image result for somebody wanted but so then

Have fun.  The ways to use this strategy can be endless.  You could even practice retelling the plot of a television show.  It could also be a way to brainstorm and organize thoughts to write or tell your own personal stories.

Here is a video lesson about a summary for the story, "Little Rabbit's Tale" by Wong Herbert Yee.
